Scholarship Tracks
Developing Artist Track
The Developing Artist Track is for dance artists who have lived and trained as a dancer in the New York City area for less than two years. Its goal is to help dancers ease the financial burden of developing a rigorous training practice as they adjust to a new environment and begin working toward a professional career.
Emerging Artist Track
The Emerging Artist Track is for pre-professional dance artists who have have lived and worked as a dancer in the New York City area for two years or longer. Its goal is to augment an existing training practice by offsetting the cost of regular class-taking.
Scholarship Benefits
Classes
Awardees in both tracks receive three classes per week at Gibney Dance for 26 weeks (or 13 classes per month for 78 total classes)
Awardees in both tracks may attend any class at Gibney Dance (280 Broadway or 890 Broadway) except for Master Classes and those listed under the "Workshops & Intensives," "Teacher Trainings," and "Training Programs" sections on the Gibney Dance Explore Classes page, located here: https://gibneydance.org/explore-classes
Mentoring
Development Artist Track awardees participate in regular mentoring sessions with Alexandra Beller, beginning with an initial session to assist the awardee in setting up a plan for how to best leverage the scholarship, and ending with a debrief and discussion of next steps for integrating the scholarship experience into future life plans.
Emerging Artist Track awardees participate in two mentoring sessions with Alexandra Beller; week 1, to assist the awardee in setting up a plan for how best to leverage the scholarship; week 26, a debrief and discussion of next steps for integrating the scholarship experience into future life plans.
Workshops/Intensives
For the Fall 2017 scholarship (July - December), awardees from both tracks may choose one of the following workshops/intensives:
Immediate Dances with Alexandra Beller
September 23, 2017 — November 18, 2017
Saturdays, 11:00 am — 2:00 pm
Immediate Dances pairs eight choreographers with up to 24 dancers for eight weeks, creating new dances each week. Dancers rotate between choreographers and each dance at the end of the week is filmed for the dancers' and choreographers' personal footage.
Note: Scholarship awardees will participate as a dancer, not as a choreographer.
In Immediate Dances, choreographers work with a new initiation prompt or score each week to create a short dance, which is shown and recorded at the end of each class. Choreographers may choose the number of dancers to work with each week. The prompts, or scores, are meant to create distinct and specific challenges related to space, time, audience relationships, meaning, imagery, narrative, and the use of text. Makers will be called upon to do spontaneous problem solving, and will build skills in immediate choice-making and unfettered creation. Dancers work with a new choreographer every week, challenging them to deepen their adaptability both stylistically and interpersonally. Unedited video documentation of every performance will be given at end of workshop to both dancers and choreographers. Dancers can receive an edited reel of their dancing throughout the course for a small additional fee (the scholarship will cover this additional fee).
Gibney Dance Company Summer Intensive
July 17, 2017 — July 21, 2017
Daily, 10:00 am — 6:00 pm
Gibney Dance Company’s weeklong summer intensive is geared toward professional and pre-professional dancers who are interested in engaging with the Company’s multifaceted perspectives on contemporary dance technique, creative process, and art as activism. The Company’s Summer Intensive will focus on enhancing technical ability, challenging physical artistry, and developing contemporary partnering expertise. Additionally, a strong focus will be placed on providing dancers with the necessary tools to propel their careers as entrepreneurial citizens in our world.
Sessions will be facilitated by members of Gibney Dance Company, each known as Artistic Associates: Nigel Campbell, Kassandra Cruz, Devin Oshiro, and Brandon Welch along with Associate Artistic Director Amy Miller.
Scholarship Responsibilities
and Policies
Awardees are responsible for the following throughout the duration of the scholarship:
- Take the three classes per week at Gibney Dance provided by the scholarship (attendance will be tracked by Gibney Dance)
- Take part in one of the two workshops or intensives
- Participate in mentoring sessions with Alexandra Beller
- Continue to take additional classes and/or workshops outside of those subsidized by the scholarship
- Submit a monthly journal in order to document training activity outside the scholarship and general thoughts on training progress
- Complete 2-3 surveys over the course of the scholarship
Attendance Policy
It is expected that the awardee's schedule will allow them to take the three classes per week provided by the scholarship in addition to their current training schedule. However, we understand that there are many demands on a dancer's time, including rehearsals, auditions, performance opportunities, injury, and other necessities.
Therefore, we understand that it may not be possible for the awardee to use all three subsidized classes every week. These classes may be made up in a subsequent week during that same month. If a pattern of not using the weekly subsidized classes continues for more than four weeks, the scholarship may be discontinued.
Injury Policy
Injuries that prevent awardees from dancing for more than four consecutive weeks will work with scholarship staff to determine whether the scholarship will be discontinued.
The scholarship may be discontinued for awardees who:
- No longer meet the Scholarship Responsibilities above
- No longer meet the Application Requirements listed on the Application page
